In Recent News: the beef plant in Aberdeen, South Dakota has shut down. They filed for bankruptcy protection in the last six months. “The shut down of the plant was not very surprising”, says Fran Simon. The owners of the plant have recently received an offer from a guy in Green Bay, Wisconsin of $12.7 Million dollars. The deal has not been made yet, but there has been an offer. The city of Aberdeen may see some personal damage from this mishap. They have invested money in this plant and many people have moved to Aberdeen to work, and now have to jobs. Hopefully something positive will come about from all this.

Service…

Standard

1. If you show people that doing community service, or any service at all isn’t bad it will be contagious to them. Helping others out of the kindness of your heart shows people you care. Putting others in front of yourself is good, being an example of a leader to others can be very inspirational. It may open their eyes and it just may be that little boost they need to go help someone!

2. When I see others helping someone it sparks a little something inside me. It makes me want to get up and do something that much more! Seeing how it affects other people and their gratefulness is sometimes all a person needs get involved.

3. No matter how big or small you contribute to service, it counts. You may not even think your helping, but you are! A little good deed may mean the world to the person receiving it. There are many different way you can volunteer and do service. Being involved in activities help with community service. For me, I am involved in FFA, FCCLA, and CCD. These are some of the groups I do community service with. We collect food for food pantry’s, clean ditches, collect pop – tabs, have teacher appreciation breakfasts, and read to the younger students. These are just some examples of service we do.

4. If someone complains about doing service, it does not make me completely hate them! I feel that if they do not want to be there, or are not doing service for the right reason they should not be there.

Corn Belt Update

Standard

The current event I choose this week was an update on how the harvest is going in the Corn Best. Harvest is wrapping up around much of the Corn Belt – but some are still struggling to finish.Zach Hunnicutt farms in central Nebraska.  “We’re still about six days out from being done with harvest,” he says.  “We got an inch of rain on Monday or Tuesday that’s going to keep us out for a little bit.  We were pretty well saturated anyway and it’s been getting cold and wet and it’s not going to dry out any time soon.” The  reason I chose this was that we have been kind of been having the same problem here in South Dakota. When a little amount of snow came, just enough to delay from continue on with harvesting. But all farmers are slowly but surely getting there crops harvested. There is noting in our control to make things go faster or in our favor for that matter. Why this is a problem is because if the famers don’t get their crop out of the field and we get a lot of snow and it may stay, could even be a more disaster with the crops being overly wet and they will not get little to no profit.

Kristin’s Garden

Standard

Kristin was inspired to take action because was all the past experiences with her older boy, who was in and out of jail and didn’t understand why should would want to help people.

If Kristin would have listened to her brother, and let him discourage her, Kristin might have been able to create such a great program for troubled youth. She impacted many lives and luckily continues to do so. She has changed the mind of many kids and turned their outlook on life.

I believe Kristen displayed leadership qualities as bravery, confidence, independence, and creativity.

Last Thursday I was faced with a problem. There was the last regular season football game in Faulkton, but I had four test the next day. I could either go to the game and study a little when I got home, or stay home from the game and study very well. I decided to make the responsible decision and stay home and study. It all payed off in the end though, I passed all my tests with good grades!

Current Event 10/25/13

Standard

Can you imagine having everything you know, and have lived with your entire life is ruined and destroyed after one freak winter storm? Farmers in Western South Dakota were thinking this after the catastrophic winter storm that took place about two weeks ago. This blizzard caused the loss of about 100,000 head of cattle to die. They were buried under all the snow. Some farmers lost almost half their entire herd in this storm. One of the ranchers compared his loss in money by saying it was buying a new pickup, driving it off a cliff, and still having to make payments. There was dead cattle everywhere. Some were found floated downstream and this spread the fear of diseases. If the major loss of cattle wasn’t enough, farmers and ranchers were faced with an emotional burden. “The state’s congressional delegation has also vowed to push ahead for quick passage of the stalled farm bill to provide immediate financial relief to ranchers.”

The sad part is that none of this could have been helped. It’s not like we have the power to control the weather. The ranchers  in Western South Dakota have a long, difficult journey ahead of them. Hopefully they will receive the help they need and deserve,

Above Average.

Standard

Nobody is average. Everyone has something about that makes them special. I like to focus on others strengths, instead of my own. But if I had to name three of my own strengths one would be, making other feel included. I know what it feels like to be felt out, and to be made to feel dumb, so I really try not to do that together’s. If it is simply complementing them, or starting a convocation with them. I think it feels good to make other feel great about themselves.

Another strength I feel I have is, using my time wisely during school. This may sound like a stupid strength, but it is actually very good to have! I always try to get all my work done during school, so I do not have to worry about it after school. I am so busy all the time with school, homework, and volleyball practice that I like to get it done when I can.

Finally, my last strength I feel I have is responsibility. The little voice in my head never shuts up. It is always working overtime, which is maybe a good thing I guess. I always have the need to do the right thing, even when I do not want to.

In the end, everyone has different strengths. It is what makes you, you!

Government Shut Down 2013

Standard

As I’m sure you may know, the government shut down this week for the first time in eighteen years. The reason it had shut down was because Congress wasn’t doing their job and could not agree on a solution. Congress’s key duty in the government is to pass spending bills that fund the government. If this does not happen, everything else comes to a stop. Many federal funded programs were closed and many worked or went home without pay. The reason it took so long for the two parties to decide on an answer was because the Replications wanted to slow funding on Obama-care, but the Democrats did not agree. Neither party was willing to budge. The government is currently still on shut down. Hopefully they can make a decision quickly. Personally I feel that the people that couldn’t make the decision and the head government should be the ones without pay. They sit on their butts, twiddling there thumbs all day, not coming up with answers.  You can see affects all around our own community. People’s parents are without pay, and our own state land and range did not have judges. If the government does not come up with a solution soon, we may be for a world of hurt.

Life Lesson

Standard

Being a Junior in high school now, I have had to come over many difficult situations. With each one you learn something new and it can change you or how you see things. In a couple different situations, i have learned a lot about myself and life in general. For instance, whatever you do, never take anyone for granted. The situation behind this is personal for which it will remain to be only known with and the individual involved. Nonetheless, no matter who much you think that person loves you, if you consistently push then around and use them, they will tell you that that they have had enough. Luckily for me, this personal taught me so much and that you never take anyone from granted. Another example I want to share with you, never let your guard down. We all have that pointless drama in school. But no matter how stupid it is, it never seems to go away. In my case, people will twist your words around and make you look like the bad guy. You can never loose sight of the truth. They will try to take everything good in your life and ruin it. That person may not be the person you thought they were. But your true friends will be there in the end. Never let your guard down. Life is never easy, but if you keep the people close to you, they will help you through it.

Standard

School:

1. Keeps A’s in all my classes { I plan to do this by spending more time studying and less on Facebook}

3. Finally win Ag Comm at State {We will have to work hard and study the tests inside and out}

Personal:

1. Play Varsity Volleyball {Will obviously have to improve my own skills and watch closely}

2. Still accomplish my goal of going to a Luke Bryan Concert {I need to find somewhere close and cheap tickets}

3. Keep a positive attitude and look at the bright sides of things {I tend to not be the most happy and supportive person and I am trying to change that!}

Current Event

Standard

The current event I choose to write about this week was the terrible explosion at the fertilizer plant in West, Texas. Last week many people turned their attention from the bombing in Boston, to the misfortune in Texas. The cause of the explosion that took place at the fertilizer plant is still unknown and being investigated. The blast occurred around 8:00 PM. Fourteen people were killed and over 200 were injured. The damage and destruction of homes and businesses is one of the worst American industrial accidents in years. The explosion left a crater where the plant use to be that is 90 feet wide. The owner of the plant is now being sued by four different insurance companies.Image
